Manufacturing in Rochester, NY Looks to Rebound

High-tech processes help a smarter industry discover ways to recover some of its luster.

The Rochester (NY) Democrat & Chronicle reports competition has pressed manufacturers in the Rochester, New York area “to streamline, pare down and generally get more efficient.” Manufacturers are using advanced software to handle process orders and other things. In addition, investments manufacturers have made in energy efficient systems “have been a major source of savings.”

Drive through almost any suburban industrial park in Rochester, and the bland boxy manufacturing shops will leave most observers unimpressed. A peek inside one of those operations would likely surprise most visitors with the modern facilities, advanced tools and skilled workers doing work for the defense, automotive and medical devices industries.

“What they can do, and who they can sell to would be amazing to most people. They think manufacturing is this old dirty type thing that doesn’t require a lot of skill. Nothing could be further from the truth,” said M&T Bank economist Gary Keith.  READ MORE
