On this date in 1929, a Tuesday, more than 16 million shares were sold on the New York Stock market in a financial collapse that left ruin and panic in its wake.  The date has been known ever since as Black Tuesday.  As a result the United States and the rest of the world sank into the Great Depression.

American newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer died aboard in his yacht on this date in 1911  His will endowed the journalism school  at Columbia University in New York City and established a fund for annual prizes to be awarded for excellence in journalism .
