The Society of Wood Manufacturing, or “SWM”, a new AWFS chapter focused on supporting high school woodshop programs in Southern California, launched in Spring 2017 and is off to a busy start. In April, SWM provided a scholarship to the SkillsUSA California Cabinetmaking contest winner, Phil Oien of San Pasqual High School (San Diego), for his travel expenses to compete in the SkillsUSA National Championships in Louisville, KY in June. At the AWFS®Fair, SWM hosted the “Make & Take” booth, where attendees could build a tea light candle holder using a drill press and materials and supplies donated by exhibitors. Through this activity, attendees learned more about the new organization and some signed up as members through SWM’s complimentary membership show special. “We look forward to making a positive impact with local educational woodworking programs,” says SWM founding President Saúl Martín. “We have a busy year ahead with activities and projects to connect industry with education and provide resources for teachers and students.”
