Apprenticeship Updates

Advocates of workforce development and industry training and education are focused on the prospect of an expanded network of apprenticeship opportunities in the U.S. to address our skills gap. It seems as though new bills are being proposed, new articles are being published, new service vendors are opening their doors, new websites are launching by the day, all focused on apprenticeships. Here are some recent highlights to get you up to speed:

    • Public Policy: President Trump recently appointed a new Apprenticeship Expansion Task Force, which will spend a year gathering information and research and report back on how the federal government should support apprenticeship programs. The task force held its first meeting on November 15, here are are notes from the meeting, courtesy of our lobbyist partner, LobbyIt.

    • Manufacturers influence Apprenticeship Legislation: NAM (National Association of Manufacturers; AWFS is a member association), has been very involved and influential in the apprenticeship discussion. Here is an update from NAM on the PROSPER act, which addresses apprenticeship programs, as well as information on an Apprenticeship Workshop hosted by the Manufacturing Institute (NAM’s education foundation), January 10 in Philadelphia.
